Sometimes, Goal Differential works as it should in International Football .
This was not one of those times.

Yup. I remember this happening in a men's world cup. The poor team got crushed every match, because no team wanted to fall behind on goal differential. It was shitty to see

My favorite is this last-minute play, when the Americans, up 12-0, go straight for another goal

It’s all about goal differential. Although one of the commentators said that it would be more of an insult to the Thais if the Americans stopped trying and just passed around.

Americas don’t need excuses to drop more bombs on Southeast Asia

What? It’s the highest tournament in the world. Having a goal differential ensures every team plays their absolute best every minute of the tournament.

By “poor team”, you mean team comprised of the beast players in their nation who managed to qualify for the highest tournament in the world?
Lol.
These are top tier athletes, not some freshmen soccer team. Their embarrassed at themselves when they fail to compete, not mad at the other team for being a a lot better than them.

The format of the tournament is such that it’s not necessarily the best 32 teams, but representatives from around the world. You’re gonna get a team that is outclassed, and that’s ok. But there is such a thing as sportsmanship, and it’s unfortunate when the way the tie breakers are structured it encourages other teams to run up the scores just because the first one did.
Here, if US and Sweden tie each other and win both games, it will come down to goal differential. Sweden is going to have to try to beat this team by 14. That's shitty.

This is the highest level of women’s soccer in the world, and it’s a one in four year tournament. There’s no such thing as running up the score. I believe Thailand just beat Malaysia last year by the same margin in a freaking friendly.
It’s not unsportsmanlike to continue to play at your highest level when playing in the highest level tournament in the world. It is unsportsmanlike to treat another high level team like a JV squad and stop playing once you have a comfortable lead.
As far as you thinking it’s a bad thing that the US put itself in a great position against Sweden, I guess if your a Swedish fan that sucks, but it’s great for the US. Thailand knows they’ll have to step their game up if they don’t want to get buried again.
These Thai women are some of the best players in the world, I’m sure if you asked them, they wouldn’t want or need your pity. And I’m sure the US women would tell you that you can chose to hold back when you make it to the World Cup.

We had to make a statement. Otherwise, the domino effect of soccer mediocrity might spread to Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos...

Haha - I will agree with the ones that said they probably should’ve backed off the celebrations once they were up 6-0 or whatever.

I will say, if they’d won 3-0 or whatever, this game wouldn’t have gotten any press. A blowout like this gets lots of attention, and maybe gets some people watching the rest of their games that wouldn’t have otherwise.

I never thought I would consider a mercy rule for a World Cup game, but.... I thinking.
Still no, but wow.

Meh, biggest stage in the world and you’re killing it? I don’t see a problem with being pumped up.
I think they should play the next match like they’re at a funeral just to be smart-asses to all the funhaters.
